My Flower Garden Get A Way

Everyone has times that you feel stressed out and up tight. Things seem to gang-up on you and you are just not sure what you need to do. These are the times that you just need to get a way, relax and clear your mind. That is when I go out to my flower gardens.

Every day I take a little time for myself to de-stress, relax and not think about anything except my flower gardens. As with everyone else I’m sure, there are so many things going on in our lives that we tend to just get stressed out. We need time to ourselves to do what we enjoy. Working in my flower beds, or even just watering my flowers helps me relax and gives me time to put things into perspective. I love flowers, the more the better. Luckily, my husband and I live on 40 acres in the country and I am about to have more flower gardens than I can keep watered in the summer. Following is a photo gallery of some of the flowers in my flower gardens.

Tulips are one of the first flowers to come up each spring. They will sometimes be blooming before the last frost. Tulips are grown from bulbs and in some climates are perennials. Other climates you would want to dig up the bulbs and keep them in a dry, dark place until early spring, when you can re-plant them. Plant them in groups and they are just gorgeous.

Daffodils are also one of the first flowers to bloom in spring. I love daffodils, they are just so cheerful after a long cold winter. Their bright yellow flowers just seem to be smiling at you to say spring is here! Daffodils are grown from bulbs and in most zones are perennials. In cold climates, you can dig up the bulbs and keep them in a cool, dry environment and plant them in late winter or early spring. They are especially striking when planted in groups.

This beauty is a purple iris. Iris bloom in early spring. They will also multiply all year and come back year after year. The roots, or Rhizomes, are easily separated and replanted. The Rhizome looks like a long, thin potato with roots underneath. Iris are wonderful plants. They need very little care and are very drought resistant. I seperate mine in late spring or early summer. I take the extras and plant them in bunches in another of my flower gardens. I have a rock ridge that runs horizontally in my back yard. I have planted my extra iris' there and in spring, my back yard is lined by beautiful purple flowers. After they have bloomed, the flat green leaves make a great "backdrop" to other plants that will bloom during summer.

This is a beautiful red hibiscus in full bloom. Hibiscus are also perennials and will come back every year. As far as I can tell, they don't drop any seeds to multiply but will put on new stems at the bottom in spring. The blooms are almost as big as a dinner plates, but unfortunately only last one day. They will also bloom all year with adequate water and in full sun.

This is a purple cone flower. Mr. Bee decided it looked like a good place to gather some pollen for breakfast. I love purple cone flowers! They are perennials in most zones and will produce new plants by dropping their seeds each year. They bloom fairly early and will continue to bloom all summer with adequate water. You need to pinch back the stem after the bloom has died to promote new blooms. When I pinch off a dead bloom, I just take my finger and push it down into the dirt. It's just like planting new seeds!

What summer flower bed would be complete without some sunflowers! I actually had not planted the sunflowers, they started coming up because of the birds dropping the sunflower seeds from my birdfeeder. As they would come up on another part of the yard, I would move them into one of my flower beds. The first ones grew fairly small plants, but as I fertilized and watered them often, the next year they came back quite large. They do need full sun and are quite Sunflowers are great flowers to attract butterflies. Sunflowers just make me happy...they are so bright and cheerful! It's just not summer without some sunflowers!

These are just a few of the flowers I have in my various flower gardens. It's amazing how beautiful flowers can lift your spirits and brighten your day.
